Search Otsego County Jail Inmates

Otsego County Jail is the sheriff-operated county jail for local custody in Gaylord, Michigan. Otsego County Jail Overview

Otsego County Jail is operated by the Otsego County Sheriff's Office and is the only detention facility identified in the county facility map. It is a county jail, not a state prison. Local custody can include people arrested by the sheriff, Gaylord Police Department, Michigan State Police units working in the area, and other agencies that use the county jail. The research did not locate a separate public city jail or long-term municipal lockup in Gaylord.

The jail holds adult male and female inmates, pretrial detainees, sentenced misdemeanants, probation and parole holds, and eligible trustee or work-camp inmates. The official county material describes a small jail with a 34-bed capacity, a corrections staff, and a mix of holding, minimum, medium, maximum, trustee, treatment, and work-camp functions. A person charged in Otsego County may remain in the jail while awaiting first appearance, bond, a court order, sentence service, or transfer.

Otsego County Jail Capacity

The official corrections page and 2024 Jail Annual Report identify Otsego County Jail as a 34-bed facility. The building was first constructed in 1967 for 24 inmates and renovated in the mid-1980s to the current rated capacity. The annual report says the 2024 average monthly population was 30 inmates, while the inspected June 12, 2026 roster listed 32 current inmates. Those figures show how close the jail can run to capacity even without a large population base.

The jail's layout is also part of its capacity story. The annual report lists one holding cell, one trustee cell, two maximum-security cells, one minimum-security cell with a day room, four medium-security cells, a booking area, sally port, control room, property room, kitchen, laundry room, medical room, conference room, fenced outdoor recreation area, and one small visit booth. The same source says the holding cell is used for observation, intoxication, medical concerns, and suicide watch when needed.

Look Up Otsego County Jail Records

Otsego County Jail records are searched through the official Otsego County Inmate Roster page. The roster is a dated PDF archive, not a live web form. Choose the newest inmate list PDF for current custody, then search inside the PDF for the person's name or jail identifier. The jail information line is the better channel when the booking may have happened after the latest PDF was posted.

  1. Open the Otsego County Inmate Roster page on the county website.
  2. Select the newest dated inmate list PDF if the goal is current custody.
  3. Use the PDF viewer's find tool for the last name, first name, jail ID, or booking number.
  4. Review the roster by name, bookings with charges, and daily releases sections.
  5. Call inmate information at 989-731-7288 or corrections at 989-731-7289 if the record is not clear.
  6. Use MDOC OTIS, BOP, ICE, or VINELink if the person is no longer in Otsego County Jail custody.

For broader roster instructions and current or released inmate records, Otsego County jail inmate records detail the PDF fields and fallback channels. A county jail roster entry should not be treated as the final court record for the case.

Visit Otsego County Jail

Otsego County Jail visits must be scheduled 24 hours in advance and before arrival. Each inmate is allowed one hour or two half-hour visits per week. Up to four visitors may attend, including children. Visitors under 18 must be with a parent or guardian and must have a birth certificate or proof of guardianship. Visitors can be denied for abusive, assaultive, profane, or security-disruptive behavior. Proper attire is required, unsuitable clothing can cause denial, and all visitors are subject to search. Because northern Michigan weather and downtown travel can affect arrival, confirm the schedule and visitor entrance with staff before leaving for a scheduled visit.

Otsego Jail Mail and Money

The official inmate information page gives several property rules but does not publish a full general mail format. No property is allowed or accepted over the front counter. Indigent inmates, defined by the county as inmates without commissary funds for two weeks, may receive limited white-material clothing items. Three soft-covered books may be ordered directly from the publisher and shipped to the jail. The jail reserves the right to refuse property.

ServiceOfficial DetailWhat to Confirm
BooksThree soft-covered books may be ordered directly from the publisher.Confirm name, jail ID, and shipping format with corrections.
CommissaryThe county payment page says to contact the Sheriff's Office directly. No public fee table, kiosk, deposit limit, or online portal was confirmed.
BondThe county payment page also says inmate bond requires direct sheriff contact.Ask about bond type, holds, payment method, and hours before arriving.
PhoneThe corrections page links to Securus inmate phone products.Verify which Securus account type is enabled for Otsego County Jail.

The county's Make a Payment page is important because it does not send users to a confirmed inmate bond or commissary payment portal. It tells users to contact the Sheriff's Office directly for those payment types. That makes phone confirmation part of the payment process.

Otsego County Jail Booking

A person may arrive at Otsego County Jail after arrest, court remand, warrant action, probation or parole hold, sentence, or transfer from another local agency. The annual report identifies a sally port, booking area, property room, change-out room, control room, medical room, holding cell, and housing cells. Public roster fields show that the jail creates jail IDs and booking numbers, records booking date and time, records release date and time when applicable, and lists arresting agency, charge class, charge description, and disposition.

Classification is the jail decision about housing and security level. In Otsego County records, public cell values can include regular cells, Minimum, Max Cell, Trustee Cell, Work Camp, Treatment, or Holding Cell. The annual report says maximum classification is based on crime and behavior, and medium cells are used for inmates with higher charges and/or sentenced status. Bond and court status are separate from the roster. A booking charge can change once the prosecutor files the formal court complaint.

Booking
The jail intake event where the person is entered into the jail system.
Detainer or hold
Another agency's legal basis to keep or transfer the person.
Classification
The jail housing and security decision based on charges, conduct, health, risk, and facility rules.
Disposition
The public status or result of a charge or custody event, such as Active or Sentenced.

Otsego County Jail Programs

Otsego County's inmate information page and annual report list more program detail than many small jail pages. Programs and services include AA/NA meetings, community service, GED education, MRT group counseling, religious counseling, trustee work, Bear River Health, Community Mental Health, church, pen pals, Community Corrections, inmate commissary and Securus telephone service, in-person and Zoom visits, work camp, and community service.

The work camp function is treated as a program or corrections division function, not as a separate mapped detention facility, because the research did not locate a distinct public work-camp building with its own address and standalone capacity. The annual report says work camp services can include yard maintenance, wood hauling and splitting, raking, mowing, brush hauling, moving assistance, small-area snow removal, downtown sidewalk snow shoveling, fairground setup, and assistance with local programs.

The official inmate information page is the source for many visiting and program rules used by Otsego County Jail families.

Otsego Jail Transfer Lookups

Otsego County Jail is the local custody point, but it is not the statewide or federal prison locator. If a person receives a state prison sentence, the record path moves to MDOC OTIS after state intake and classification. OTIS may show state offender photos and sentence details, but it does not include county jail inmates, city lockup inmates, people convicted but not yet sentenced to prison, jail-only sentences, or offenders off supervision more than three years.

Federal and immigration custody also use separate systems. Use the BOP inmate locator for federal inmates in BOP custody from 1982 to present. Use the ICE Online Detainee Locator System for covered adult immigration detention searches by A-number or biographical details. For victim or custody notifications, Michigan VINE / VINELink may be useful, but Otsego County Jail participation for a specific person should be confirmed with VINE or the jail.

Note: Confirm custody and visit scheduling directly with Otsego County Jail before traveling, sending money, or relying on an older PDF roster.
